You’ve planned the perfect adventurous elopement in Sedona, Arizona. Or maybe you’re eloping in the Pacific Northwest in the North Cascades. You have a dress, an epic photographer, a planner to help your day go smoothly, a rad florist, and you even hired a videographer to create the most romantic video of your special day to relive a million times over.

Now, what about your hair and makeup? Chances are you’ve pinned a couple photos you’re drawn to, but are not sure what will look best in such a grand setting. That is where I come in, of course. I like to take my time chatting with you to figure out your elopement day vibe and build a look that completes the whole moment. If you’re not one of my brides receiving one-on-one consulting, here are FIVE TIPS to help you decide on the perfect Elopement Hair and Makeup look.

#1 The Elements

Take into consideration what the climate is like in the exact area you are saying I Do. Is wind a factor? Is there a chance of rain or snow? Remember, hiking up will often times introduce you to a climate much different than we experience on a day to day basis. If wind or snow is a factor, I would opt for an updo finished with an anti-humectant hairspray for long-lasting hold. I recommend this one from Monat, it’s my tried and true, and I never do an elopement without it. If you’re in a dry climate or it’s Summer and precipitation isn’t a factor, I say let your hair down. Maybe even opt for 18″ or 20″ extensions and create something really romantic and flowy for that EPIC money shot.

#2 Contrast

When it comes to hair & makeup being photographed on such a grand scale, it’s important your features don’t get lost. Even if you don’t normally wear eyeliner, it’s important we really see your eyes, which can tend to get lost in Elopement photos. I recommend at least wearing eyeliner on your top lash line for some solid facial contrast. I recommend a waterproof liner like the one Inglot sells here.

#3 Accessories

Adding hair accessories is the perfect way to dress up your look. It can be something as simple as a fresh floral half crown, a few fresh flowers pinned individually, or a long veil to blow in the wind. Ask your florist to either make a floral comb for you or leave you with a few loose florals to have your hair stylist pin in. If florals aren’t your thing, check out Etsy for an accessory.

#4 Foundation

Choosing product that photographs well, particularly for the skin, is really important. Most of my eloping couples are hiking at least a few miles to get to their ceremony location, so products that can withstand the elements and some perspiration are extremely important. One of my favorite products to use for Elopement Makeup is KVD Vegan Beauty – Lock It Foundation.

#5 YOU

Consider who YOU are. Do you wear makeup everyday? Is your hair always in a ponytail or do you typically wear it down? One of the most beautiful and appealing aspects of eloping is that it’s all about you and your partner. It’s an authentic experience without pretense or traditions you don’t personally connect with. This should be reflected in your hair & makeup. If you are wild and love color, add a fun tone to your balayage color service. If you are more natural, keep things a little bohemian with effortless, flowing waves. Don’t forget, this is for your and your partner, not anyone else, after-all that’s why you’re eloping in the first place!
